Specialist training in intensive care / anaesthesia

Training objective

  • Providing planned intensive care and assisting in the monitoring and implementation of treatment measures for patients with acute disorders of vital functions
  • Assisting in medical activities, e.g., in the implementation and monitoring of specialist therapeutic and diagnostic measures
  • Providing, operating, and monitoring the equipment necessary for maintaining vital functions (e.g., ventilators)
  • Caring for and monitoring patients in the field of anesthesia
  • Initiating initial measures and assisting in emergency situations

Admission requirements

  • Professional license in accordance with § 1 of the Nursing Professions Act and relevant professional experience (after completion of training) of one year, including at least 6 months in either intensive care or anesthesia.

Theoretical further training

  •  At least 720 teaching hours in block phases and study days

Practical further training

  • At least 2,350 hours in compulsory and optional placements (intensive care units, anesthesia departments, work shadowing, etc.)

Future prospects

Successful completion of the training program opens up opportunities to work in intensive care units in various disciplines, in emergency rooms, in anesthesia (operating rooms), and in many other medical fields. Further qualifications, management positions und academic studies are also possible.

Duration of training

  • 2 years full-time (part-time possible)
