Nursing professionals specializing in pediatric care look after and care for children and adolescents in all areas of pediatric nursing (hospitals, inpatient long-term care facilities, outpatient nursing services, clinics, etc.). Generalist nursing training began in 2020 and replaced the previous nursing training programs (geriatric care, health and nursing care, and health and pediatric nursing). The training qualification is recognized throughout Europe.
The tasks (excerpt):
- Providing expert care for premature babies, newborns, children, and adolescents during their stay in the inpatient ward of an acute care hospital, a long-term inpatient care facility, or in outpatient care.
- Supporting, advising, and guiding young patients and their caregivers in health and care-related issues.
- Selecting and implementing appropriate care measures.
At the end of the training, the nursing specialist with a specialization in pediatric care will be able to:
- Independently assess care needs, plan care measures, organize and manage the care process, analyze, evaluate, and develop the quality of care.
- Advise children and adolescents in need of care and their caregivers and strengthen their everyday skills.
- Initiate immediate life-saving measures until the medical service arrives.
- Independently carrying out medically prescribed measures, in particular medical diagnostics, therapy, or rehabilitation measures.
- Communicating professionally and collaborating effectively with other professional groups in an interdisciplinary manner, developing individual multidisciplinary and interprofessional solutions for medical conditions and care needs, and implementing them in a team-oriented manner.
- 2.500 hours in various specialist disciplines
In practical training with a focus on pediatric care, the emphasis is on a significantly higher proportion of practical hours in the departments of pediatrics and adolescent medicine, both in hospitals and in inpatient long-term care and outpatient care facilities. All three areas of application must be covered during the training. There are also placements in psychiatric care.
The Akademie² will be happy to assist you in finding a suitable provider for your practical training so that you can get off to a good start in your training.
Upon successful completion of the training, there is the opportunity for further qualification, e.g.:
- Department manager
- Practical instructor
- Various specialist training courses, e.g., oncology, intensive care, and anesthesia
Various degree programs can also be taken, e.g., vocational education in healthcare, healthcare management, or applied nursing science.
